He's more interested in what I am than what I do. That's why we're called human beings, not human doings.

--Rick Warren, author of The Purpose-Driven Life

On the first working day of 2006, I heard the rather sad news that the daughter of a former superior had committed suicide at age 22 before Christmas.  Most of my colleagues expressed sympathy towards what had happened to this former superior, but very few had fond memory of him.  He was known to rage against his subordinates if he found anything less than perfect from them.  Throwing the documents on the face of the person was common.

While I felt sorry for what had happened, it also led me to think about what was important at work.  During the past year when work got very hectic and at times overwhelming, I had to remind myself that the focus should be more on the person than on the projects.  After all, the projects will be forgotten in a year or two, but how you have treated the person may remain for a lifetime.  Rather than seeing my colleagues merely as ways to get projects done, I would rather see the projects as ways to build people up.
