I visited the Kansai region on a group tour with my family in 2002. I tagged along two Korean friends this time for four days, to make up for the Himeji castle I had missed last time and to meet with my former manager, now our Osaka office director, and his family. I wanted to thank him in person for making such a difference in my career. If I had not worked for him, I would have left long time ago and would not have had the opportunity to work in Seoul. I try to emulate his leadership qualities as I build the team in Seoul.
Having lived in Seoul for over 2 years, Kansai was a strangely familiar place. Even though I did not speak Japanese, it was fairly easy to navigate around, via extensive and prompt Japanese public transportation network with most signs in Chinese characters (Kanji). I was quite surprised how much Taiwanese taste is influenced by the Japanese--down to the packed meals in convenience stores!
Unlike the Korean Won, Japanese Yen has fallen against the US dollar in the last few years. Recent survey puts Seoul ahead of either Tokyo and Osaka in terms of living cost. Except for public transportation, the prices are about the same in Kansai than in Seoul, but the quality is much better. I wish I had more time to shop (very unusual for a person who generally does not like to shop!)
