永遠不要因為這個工作不好而辭職,一定要因為另一個工作更好而辭職

I have made more than one career change in the 15 years I have been working.  Taking classes or tests, as well as working part-time or on a project on the side, are all good ways to explore career options.  To me it's a process of convincing myself whether I should jump the ship and switch to a different career.

In my first job I was called several times on the spot to interpret, so I took an evening course in simultaneous interpretation to see if I was cut for it.  With over a hundred registered for the course, only 30 were selected, and I was the one of the two who completed the course and passed the final exam.   I would have to study full-time if I wanted to make a career out of interpretation and translation, an option I had already kept in mind even to this day.

The switch to mass media was by project work.  I had submitted my resume to a major media just to see if I had any chance to work for them.  What I didn't know was that they were planning to launch a health related magazine at that time, looking for someone with health science background with  writing experience.  They asked me initially to help with the special issue that preceeded the launch.  After finishing that project on the side, they asked if I would consider joining them full-time.

Even in the current workplace, I am on the lookout for work that interests me in and out of the organization.  While opportunities may not arise immediately, I still try to express tactfully to the managers in charge that I am interested in working for them.  While I cannot be in 100% control of my career, I don't want it to be controlled by the whims of high-level executives to whom I am just a number either.  We should know the general directions towards which we head, even if we cannot determine the precise course.

Life is an adventure!  We will never know what we are capable of doing until we try.
